Feeling Drained? A Mid-Year Reset Might Be Exactly What You Need
Can we talk about how exhausting this point in the year can feel?
The excitement and motivation we had in January are long gone, the kids are deep into the school year, work has piled up, winter mornings make getting out of bed harder, and somehow we’re already halfway through the year wondering where the time went.
As a mom, I know how easy it is to slip into autopilot. You wake up, get everyone where they need to be, work through the day, think about dinner, deal with homework and school admin, and then do it all again tomorrow. Somewhere in between all of that, you’re also supposed to take care of yourself.
It’s a lot.
That’s why I’ve started thinking about winter as a good time for a mid-year reset. Not a dramatic “new year, new me” overhaul. I don’t have the energy for that, and I’m guessing many other moms don’t either. Just a chance to look at everyday life and ask: What’s working? What’s draining me? And what could I change to make the second half of the year feel a little lighter?
Here are five areas I think are worth looking at.
1. Fix the part of your routine that’s making life harder
By the middle of the year, you usually know where the cracks are.
Maybe mornings are complete chaos. Maybe you’re staying up far too late scrolling because nighttime is the only time you get to yourself. Maybe you keep skipping breakfast, forgetting lunches or spending every Sunday night stressed about the week ahead.
You don’t need to fix everything at once. Pick one thing.
For me, some of the biggest differences often come from the smallest changes: packing what I can the night before, putting my phone down earlier, getting into bed 30 minutes sooner or making time for a short walk when I can.
The goal isn’t to create a perfect routine. It’s to make your actual life a little easier.
2. Give your skin some extra love
My skin always knows when winter has arrived.
Between cold mornings, indoor heating and those very hot showers that feel amazing in the moment, skin can quickly become dry, tight and irritated. So this is usually the time of year when I look at what I’m using and ask whether my summer routine is still doing the job.
Gentler cleansers and richer moisturisers can make a big difference when your skin barrier is taking strain.
The SKNLOGIC Gentle Cleanse Cream, for example, contains Fig Extract with moisturising properties that help hydrate the skin while giving it a gentle tightening effect.
If dullness, dehydration or uneven skin tone are concerns, the newly launched Hada Labo Glow Brightening Hydrator is another option. The lightweight Japanese water-gel lotion combines Super Hyaluronic Acid, Tranexamic Acid and Hatomugi Extract to support hydration and help improve the appearance of dark marks and uneven tone. I also like that the texture is light and absorbs quickly, because not everyone enjoys heavy products on their face.
And winter body care matters too. If you need something to wake you up on a freezing morning, the Earthsap Citrus & Ginger Body Wash combines coconut, grapefruit and ginger in a fresh, citrus-scented wash.
For very dry winter skin, the Bodylab Camphor Complex Soothing Body Cream is a richer option designed to moisturise while helping soothe dryness and irritation. Especially useful if, like me, you have no intention of giving up your hot showers just yet.
3. Check in with what the family is eating
Winter makes me want carbs. There, I said it.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with comfort food. But when everyone is tired and busy, it’s also very easy to fall into the habit of eating whatever is quickest and then wondering why your energy levels are on the floor.
A mid-year reset doesn’t have to mean a restrictive diet. I’m much more interested in small, realistic changes: adding more vegetables to meals, keeping seasonal fruit in the house, making warming soups, eating more legumes and whole grains, and remembering to drink water even when it’s cold.
The best changes are usually the ones you can actually maintain.
4. Reset the house — without turning it into a massive project
There’s something about winter that makes a home feel more cluttered.
The windows are closed more often, everyone is indoors, blankets are everywhere and the house can start feeling a little stale. I find that even a small home reset can make a surprising difference to how I feel.
Wash the couch blankets. Change the bedding. Clear that one surface where everyone dumps everything. Open the windows for a little while when the weather allows. Clean the areas you’ve been pretending not to see.
This can also be a good time to think about the products you use around your family. Plant-based cleaning products, such as those from Earthsap, offer an option for households wanting to reduce their use of harsher chemicals while still keeping everyday spaces clean.
Again, you don’t need to deep-clean the entire house in one weekend. One room is enough.
5. Make space for things that make you feel like yourself
This one is probably the most important.
Wellbeing isn’t only about what you eat, how often you exercise or which products you use. Sometimes it’s about remembering that you are a person outside of work, school runs, lunchboxes and everyone else’s needs.
Read the book. Go for the walk. Meet the friend. Watch the silly show. Start the hobby you keep saying you don’t have time for. Put your phone down and sit with your children without trying to multitask.
And if you have little ones, winter can be a lovely excuse to slow down and spend more time together indoors — reading, baking, playing or getting creative.
Anything that makes family life simpler also gets my vote. Vital Baby’s Nourish Prep & Wean, for example, allows parents to steam, cook and blend homemade meals in one machine, which can help reduce both kitchen clutter and the number of steps involved in preparing food for little ones.
Then, once the house is quiet — or as quiet as a house with children ever gets — creating a calmer atmosphere can be as simple as lighting a candle.
The SoyLites Clarity Tumbler Candle, with Bergamot, Patchouli, Lemon and Rosewood, is designed to create an uplifting, calming atmosphere. For daytime, the Energise Tumbler Candle, with Spearmint, Peppermint, Geranium and Ginger, offers a fresher, more energising scent.
You don’t need to reinvent your life
That’s really the point of a mid-year reset.
You don’t need a new personality, a 5am routine, a perfect meal plan and a completely decluttered house by Monday.
Sometimes you just need to notice what isn’t working anymore and give yourself permission to change it.
Maybe that means going to bed earlier. Maybe it’s taking better care of your skin, eating a few more nourishing meals, making your home feel calmer or finding your way back to something you enjoy.
Small changes count.
And perhaps that’s the best thing about a winter reset: it reminds us that growth doesn’t only happen in the bright, exciting seasons of life. Sometimes the quieter months are exactly when we get the chance to come back to ourselves.
